No magnesium form has been proven superior for sleep in head-to-head trials. What the numbers actually say

Why it matters for your night

A daily 2 g dose delivers only about 144 mg of elemental magnesium at a premium price. There is no published randomized human trial of threonate for sleep.
The honest counterpoint
A skeptic would say the overall evidence for magnesium and sleep is weak — the 2021 meta-analysis found no significant benefit — so arguing about salts is rearranging deck chairs. That objection is partly right. If magnesium were a powerful hypnotic, the trials would have shown it by now; what remains is a plausible, modest effect concentrated in people with low intake.
The response: form still matters, just not for the reason the ads imply. It matters for tolerability (citrate's laxative effect), for elemental dose per capsule (threonate's low yield), and for consistency — the well-absorbed form you take every night beats the "sleep-optimized" one you abandon after a week of stomach trouble.
